Ani DiFranco - Unprecedented Sh!t
For almost 35 years, Ani DiFranco has been a feminist icon and pioneer of DIY (Do It Yourself). Since founding her record label “Righteous Babe Records” in 1990, she has released 22 albums. Her musical genre includes folk, punk, hip-hop, soul and electronic music.
Her new album “Unprecedented Sh!t” translates as “never seen before crap”. In terms of sound and lyrics, the 11-track album is intended to represent exactly that. In collaboration with producer BJ Burton, the two, created tracks that tell the current political and social state of the world. “I believe there is a reason why these songs came together in this way and I want you to experience this album as a journey and a work of art, without the influence of surrounding narratives,” says Ani about her latest masterpiece.
The song “The Knowing” is inspired by her children's book of the same name, which explores and affirms the importance of being yourself. This song serves as an overarching message for the entire album. “The idea that we can harness the power and value of identity without limiting ourselves to it”.
She even received a Grammy and numerous nominations for her 2003 album “Evolve”.
Ani DiFranco recently returned from her five-month time on Broadway, where she starred as “Persephone” in the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical “Hadestown”.
Nowadays, every artist's album has to have a story. The music can't speak for itself. But Ani DiFranco wonders why her work can't speak for itself.
